In celebration of their 52nd Anniversary, coming into existence since 1960,
Thomas United Football Club (TUFC) will be hosting a Mashramani Challenge Cup tournament (MCC) in the collaboration with Winners Connection Football Club (WCFC) of Linden, kicking off next month at various venues across Guyana.
Aimed at contributing to the development of youths and the sport, Cathy Hughes, an Alliance for Change (AFC) Parliamentarian presented a trophy to the organisers (TUFC) while hailing the existance of the second oldest club in Guyana; the Georgetown Football Club being the first.
Hughes stated that she was very honoured to participate in the venture, lamenting the importance of youths in our country.
“I am very honoured…this is a starting off point to encourage youths to participate in productive extra curricula activities.”
The Mashramani Challenge Cup will see sixteen senior clubs vying for supremacy at the McKenzie Sports Club, Georgetown Football Club, Beterverwagting and Uitvlugt Community Centre Grounds.
Member of the Organising Committee, Ronald Lee-Bing, stated that games which are scheduled to play in the MCC will be double headers starting in the evenings (18:00 & 20:00hrs) while games at Uitvlugt and BV will commence at 14:00 and 16:00hrs.
Lee Bing further revealed that the tournament is sanctioned by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
A top prize of $500,000 is set aside for the winner along with an attractive trophy while the runner-up team will collect $300,000.
The players of the winning team will have their names engraved on the trophy while they will also be presnted with replicas.
