Senior national champion Taffin Khan will be the man to beat when the
Trophy Stall, in association with the Guyana Chess Federation presents the 3rd Annual Trophy Stall Chess tournament, scheduled to get underway at the Keishars Sports Club, 1 Hadfield Street, Georgetown tomorrow morning when the first 2 rounds would be contested.
Subsequently, the 2nd and 3rd rounds get underway on February 4th and 5th respectively. Apart from Khan, several other notable players will compete in the tournament including national junior champion Suhai Feng and Anthony Drayton among others. The winner of last year’s tournament, Loris Nathoo, will not be contesting.
Yesterday morning, President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), Shiv Nandalall journeyed to the Bourda Market business place of Trophy Stall where the Managing Director, Ramesh Sunesh handed over the sponsorship package for the tournament.
Director of Youth and Sports Neil Kumar was also present at the ceremony. He conveyed deep gratitude to the Trophy Stall proprietor and noted that he always rises to the call. Mr. Kumar further congratulated the executive of the GCF for the enthusiasm and vibrancy displayed in organizing tournaments.
Mr. Nandalall also expressed deep appreciation for the gift even as he reminded that the Trophy Stall has been sponsoring the tournament for the past three years. He said that chess players has shown remarkable progress during last year and promised that executives of the GCF would continue to work ardently towards their development.
He admitted that the process seemed a bit slow but pointed out that his executives will continue to place a lot of emphasis in this department to augment the steady progress of the players.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sunesh expressed delight at once again being given the opportunity to support the developmental programmes planned by the GCF. He promised to continue in this vein since he views such support as beneficial to the development of the chess players as well as a corporate duty.
Additionally, the executive of the GCF would convene at the Olympic House, High Street Georgetown to present those players that were successful in the junior championships, staged late last year, with their prizes.
