After about two hours of deliberation, a mixed jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty in a case involving an East Coast Demerara man accused of raping a woman.
The defendant, Steve Providence, was accused of raping the woman on November 13, 2006. The allegation was that on November 13, 2006 he had carnal knowledge of a female without her consent.
He was also accused of using a gun to rob the woman of one gold ring, one silver and gold band and a silver ring. He was without an attorney.
Prosecutors Konyo Sandiford and Diana Kowlessar presented the case for the state. Justice Dawn Gregory was the presiding Judge.
Justice Gregory listed the ingredients for rape which the jury should follow. Those were the accused had sex unlawfully with the woman. Secondly without consent and knowing that she did not consent and lastly he had sex with the victim by force and he placed fear in her. The judge also gave them (jury) the ingredients for robbery under arms.
The jury was also reminded about the unsworn statement which the defendant gave. In that statement he challenged the identification process amongst other things. He had vehemently denied being involved in the act, stating that he wasn’t near where it happened.
