The Preliminary Inquiry into the matter against indicted anti-narcotics cop, Sherwin Smith, who is accused to killing drug rehab counselor Ralph Turpin last year, got underway yesterday.
Smith who is accused of shooting Turpin at the Stabroek Market Square on September 15 is represented by a barrage of lawyers including Senior Counsel, Bernard De Santos, in association with Pamela De Santos, Glen Hanoman and Kayreen Stephenson.
Prosecuting is Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Eldon Gibson. Karen Busby, the first witness in the matter, testifies that she was a close friend of Turpin and was in his company at the time of his death. She disclosed what she had done and what she had seen on the alleged day.
Subsequently, she was cross-examined by De Santos after being led through her evidence by the prosecutor.
The matter was adjourned to February 20th, but De Santos indicated that he is nowhere close to being finished with Busby as a witness. She is thought to be a huge part of the prosecution’s case.
In early September last year, Turpin who was the drug counselor at the Phoenix Drug Rehabilitation Centre at Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara, and ran another halfway house, at his Lot 25 Agriculture Road, Mon Repos residence, was shot twice in the head after trying to settle a heated argument between two women. Turpin jumped in as peacemaker when Smith allegedly shot him at point blank range.
