School children as well as residents residing close to a site that burns rubber-coated metals, at Affiance, Essequibo Coast, are complaining of becoming ill after being exposed to what they say is the highly toxic gas that is posing severe consequences to their health.
Frustrated residents said they continue to become ill after breathing in the gas from the burnt material.
Mathadeen Etwaroo, a businessman whose house is situated oblique to the site, said all of his family members constantly complained of feeling unwell. Etwaroo, said his sister, Deomattie, is currently hospitalized in a North American hospital after falling severely ill due to the daily inhalation of the toxic gas.
He said that his sister started to cough and on another occasion, she was spitting blood. Etwaroo added that one of his sister’s lungs has also collapsed. “The symptoms are compounded with stomach pains, headache and itching.”
Etwaroo stressed while his family was thrown into a lot of expense to get his sister to seek professional medical care, he is still worried about her returning to Guyana to be confronted with the same problem.
He added that persons keep falling ill and dying, many not knowing fully the real cause of death.
Meanwhile, a senior official at the Taymouth Manor Primary School said the students are gravely affected by the smoke. He said that on one occasion the school was forced to call in the fire service due to thick smoke that was emanating from the site.
The teacher added that some children are affected by asthma and the toxic gas posed severe risks to their health.
Sadna, a young woman, said that she was hospitalised for one week, after inhaling the toxic smoke. The young woman said that she is constantly afflicted with stomach pains, headache and itching.
Two other residents have also complained that they are being currently treated for a lung condition. Several men have also complained of losing their libido.
Etwaroo said that he spoke to the Public Health Department at Anna Regina and was told by an officer, “We spoke to the guy about three times and the man seems to persist.”
The police say the matter is out of their jurisdiction.
