– improves times with top TTUTA finishes
Guyana’s senior national distance athletes, Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson sustained their early
form this year when they finished on podium in the Trinidad and Tobago United Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) 10km Road Race Saturday evening.
Johnson won the race in a steamy 33:01, which not only turned the tide on D’Andrade, who had beaten him at the Bigi Broki Waka 10km Road Race in Suriname two weeks ago, but was better than his 34:11.8 time that he produced then.
D’Andrade was third in the TTUTA event in 33:42 behind Trinidad’s Curtis Cox, who had 33:07 for second place. D’Andrade won the Bigi Broki Waka 10km Road Race in 34:10.4, registering a time that also suggested improvement in the first month of the 2012 season.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport from Trinidad and Tobago yesterday, the Guyanese athletes indicated that they are delighted with their performances asJohnson, D’Andrade sustain early 10k form it meant that they are consistently running their best times. Both D’Andrade and Johnson are based in Trinidad.
“As you can see, we are breaking down our times; we want to maintain this for the entire year so that our distance running national team will be strong this year,” D’Andrade stated. He spoke on behalf of Johnson, who he said was there with him at the time.
The athletes said that they are preparing to compete at the Trinidad Half Marathon in March and will be
looking to dominate the region following that event. They said that competing in 10k will help improve their speed when they approach the longer distances.
