Jan 23, 2012 Letters
Dear Editor,
I would like to share what I consider an example of crass opportunism and an attempt at exercising undue pressure and influence on our President. I refer to a letter purportedly written in the Stabroek News by one Andrea Thomas and in the Guyana Chronicle by “name withheld”, both on 20/1/2012, applauding the good qualities of Keith Burrowes, who apparently is the only example of dedication in this country.
Informed persons are only too aware that it was Burrowes who was former President Jagdeo’s cat’s paw in many undertakings, including as a member of various boards, including Guysuco, GO-INVEST, GNCB, GuyExpo, Chronicle, Guyana Financial Services.
This is not to mention his position as Executive Director for the Ministry of Health’s Health Sector Development, which I understand he hardly attends to due to his other commitments.
By the way, can anyone say what the current status is for these entities? Burrowes is the person who proudly acclaimed publicly that Jagdeo is the best President Guyana ever had.
With the revelations which the media are now presenting to Guyanese, it would not be a far stretch to re-evaluate the culpability of certain persons or their lack thereof in the furtherance of some of these shady and secret deals.
By the way what ever happened to his “Friends of Donald” outfit?
This should be now seen in the context of positioning himself for an important appointment where he could influence and a measure of control over certain government Ministers and Permanent Secretaries from the previous administration due to his connections.
Privately, a few of the more outspoken ones have pointed to Jagdeo’s pettiness and vindictiveness as the reason for their tolerance.
So what if he writes articles; where is the depth in them anyway?
The fact that he controls the discredited Chronicle automatically guarantees him a space no matter how inconsequential his topic.
I am yet to be convinced that Burrowes works for “free”, which is a relative term anyhow. His “resignation” from State boards may be a not so subtle reminder to President Ramotar that he had contributed to his election campaign and should be rewarded.
What we need from this point onwards is a system of governance that promotes development beyond a dependence on a small group of questionable intellectual capital. So maybe we can seek other professional people instead of having one individual hogging several positions at once like a “jack of all”, to move forward.
