There were resounding calls yesterday for the Mayor and City Council to remove all trees that are in close proximity to buildings.
But those calls came too late for 73-year-old Shieldston Roberts.
A huge palm tree crashed down on his home at Lot 497 Kiskadee Drive North East La Penitence, at around 14:00 hrs.
The tree destroyed his kitchen, bedroom, bath area and shattered several windows. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the incident. Roberts yesterday told Kaieteur News that it was around 14:00hrs when someone gave him the message. He explained that he was at the barber when he got the news.
“I would have to get up early for work so I decided to cut my hair….and I was doing that when someone came and told me that the tree fell on my house” Roberts said yesterday. The man said he rushed back home only to see half of the house destroyed. Roberts said he’s at a loss as to who would help him repair the house since, according to him, the City Council will wash their hands of the responsibility.
The elderly man disclosed that he plans to write the City Hall today to complain about the trees in close proximity to houses in the neighbourhood.
Only last November a five year old girl was killed after heavy winds caused a tree to crash down on her home while she slept.
The child, Tammica Hackett, of Freeman Street, East La Penitence attended the East La Penitence Primary School. Four days after the child’s death, workers from the City Engineer’s department had cleared out the trees in that area.
Ron Eastman, an engineer from the City Engineer’s Office, had told Kaieteur News that they would have removed trees in the area once they pose a threat.
Kaieteur News was also told that the Mayor and City Council would always undertake to trimming of trees. However, Eastman asserted that during the “wet season,” trees would fall because of the sodden soil as well as the fact that many are at the end of their lifespan.
