Police, Home Affairs Ministry deny using undercover ‘trunkers’

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Guyana Police Force yesterday issued a statement disclaiming allegations of ever giving persons permission to perform covert operations to thwart ‘trunking’.
Referring to a letter published in Kaieteur News newspaper on January 19, 2012, the office of the Home Affairs Ministry is refuting the claim made by two men caught red handed breaking into a vehicle parked at the junction of Sheriff Street and the East Coast Demerara Highway on January 15.
The security forces said that they were astonished though not surprised by the false claims made by the men who stated that they were staff members of the agencies working undercover.
This, they felt, was harmful and unpleasant for the reputation and prestige of the law upholding organizations.
The authorities have thus indicated their interest in instituting charges against the ‘trunkers’ which they say will include providing misleading information to the police.
On January 19, a letter was written to Kaieteur News by a man who recalled his experience when his vehicle was broken into by ‘trunkers’. The men detained for the crime said that they worked for the police force in connection with the Home Affairs Ministry.

The Ministry of Home Affairs refers to a letter to the editor, which appeared in the January 19, 2012 edition of the Kaieteur News, captioned ‘Trunkers’ claimed to be employed by Home Ministry and Police Force’, in which the writer recounted his experience on the evening of January 15, 2012, while his car was parked at the junction of Sheriff Street and the East Coast Highway.

The Ministry is astonished, though not surprised, that the suspected thieves arrested by the Police, would claim to be staffers of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The public is hereby advised that it does not have any person (s) in its employ to conduct covert activities of the nature referred to.

It is expected that all applicable charges will be instituted against the duo, including for providing misleading information to the Police.
