– Association promises busy year for basketball in Linden
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) will launch their Trophy Stall-sponsored League today. The League will bounce off on January 27 at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Court and is expected to feature all of the LABA-affiliated clubs.
According to a release from the association, when approached, Trophy Stall’s proprietor Ramesh Sunich was not hesitant to sponsor the League. Sunich mentioned that over the years the people of Linden have been very supportive of his entity, and has made it their top choice in purchasing trophies for various events.
The LABA indicated that it is more than overwhelmed by the gesture made by the Trophy Stall and promised an action-packed League. LABA Vice-President, Rawle Toney said the League plays an important part in the LABA’s plans for the rest of the year.
“We have a packed agenda planned for this year. It’s no secret that we’re behind or I should say far from where we want to be, but off the court, our team have been working and came up with enough activities that will certainly see plenty basketball being played at all levels in Linden,”
Toney noted in the release.
He added that the LABA have been getting calls from the various clubs asking what is next on their agenda and when tournaments will be played and as a result, they are obligated to answer those questions with producing an active season for them.
The LABA recently wrapped up its Under-23 tournament that saw the Retrieve Raiders upsetting the Victory Valley Royals (VVR) 56-55 in the finals.
“The U-23 was keenly contested and that is a prelude to what we could expect in this League as most of the core players from those teams are youths,” Toney continued, adding that most of the clubs in Linden are always occupied on their respective community courts.
The LABA VP said that sponsorship continues to be a sore point for sports, but noted that LABA is happy that they have been receiving kind and solid offers from the corporate community and will ensure basketball players and fans are kept busy and entertained.
“Everyone wants to see basketball, but there’s a lot to do to ensure that when we start, we do not fall off. We still have to facilitate the VVR School’s basketball tournament, which I must say has been a mainstay for the sport (at the schools’ level) in Linden over the past seven years,” Toney said.
The Victory Valley Royals won the last LABA League with the Amelia’s Ward Jets finishing as runners-up.
