It has been the initial route taken by most of the top Formula 1 drivers in the world
and even though Guyana is yet to produce a driver of the caliber of champions such as Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso, many in local motor racing would know that they’ve all done a stint of go-kart racing during their careers.
When the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) stages its season opener on January 29, at the club’s Headquarters on Albert Street fans of the sport will have a first hand opportunity to see some of the budding stars in the sport compete against each other as they battle for supremacy during the Fun-Day which is scheduled to commence at 14:00 hrs.
According to information received, the club which had a sterling year in 2011 is aiming to maintain its high standard and busy schedule on both the local and international scenes and supporters of the sport can expect some thrilling races and family oriented concepts that will form part of the list of activities on the entity’s 2012 calendar of events.
The one-hour Endurance race has been slated as the feature event, while fans will also be able to get a glimpse of the fleet of young competitors.
Wayne Vieira, one of the persons tasked with coordinating the day’s activities told Kaieteur Sport that the feature event should produce a lot of excitement.
“This race is for competitors over the age of 30 years and no more than nine machines owned by the club with an allotment of three drivers are permitted to drive during the period of the race and they must have a total body weight of no less than 450 lbs combined.
“The three designated drivers cannot have less than 450 lbs, but will be allowed to weigh in excess of that,” Vieira said.
He said that at the end of the Endurance event sprint races featuring the ‘young guns’ in their Shifter and Rotax go-karts will be on the programme.
The action then moves to the South Dakota Circuit the next weekend (February 5) with a Meet for rookie car drivers, ‘B’ Class Super bikers, 125cc motor bikes and karters both in the same Shifter and Rotax categories with each division assigned three races.
Once again the fledglings in the sport will be on show among them being Elliot Vieira, Matthew Vieira, Mikhail Seereram, Denzil Hopkinson, Raymond Seebarran, Alex Fiedtkou, Matthew and Jonathan Phang and Edward and Alex Powers for the boys, while the girls will be spearheaded by Britney Seereram, Emma Vieira, Stacy and Serena Ming and Alexandria Phang.
However, this time the real stars in the sport such as Marcus Fiedtkou, Kevin Jeffrey, Stanley Ming Snr and Mark Vieira among others will add flavour to the day’s exhilaration.
