Guyana’s 2012 Olympic Games aspirant, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan’s preparations to the prestigious
tournament encountered a slight setback after he was stabbed in his arm following an altercation with another man over a conversation with a young lady.
Khan related that at around 15:20hrs yesterday afternoon he journeyed to the Dolphin Secondary School to pick up his younger sibling after school had recessed. He said that he encountered a young lady who is a former schoolmate at the corners of Sussex and Smyth Streets and spent a few minutes catching up on old times.
The lanky boxer said that a young man who he averaged to be in his mid twenties approached and upbraided him for speaking with the young lady. “He then pointed his hand in my face and I retaliated by striking him,” said Khan. A fight ensued and Khan said that some friends that had witnessed the infraction tore them apart and advised him to leave the scene. “I was leaving when the guy snuck up behind me and stabbed me,” said Khan.
Indeed, he sported a bandaged hand after medical practitioners had attended to the wound. Luckily, the prognosis is not that bad and despite intense swelling around the area the injury is expected to heal pretty soon. However, the bantamweight fight between the injured boxer and Pocket Rocket Boxing gym representative, Richard Williamson scheduled for Friday January 27 will most likely be called off to facilitate the healing process.
Khan has been spotlighted for national duty at the impending London Olympics Games and already has had several international outings during preparations. He has earned lucrative accolades in Venezuela, Trinidad and Barbados and is scheduled to leave for the United Kingdom on February 18 to undergo a one month training stint under the auspices of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). That initiative doesn’t seem to be in jeopardy.
Meanwhile, Khan was invited to the Ruimveldt Police Station where the lawmen took a statement before instructing him to seek medical attention. They have since launched an investigation into the matter.
