Deonarine leads Guyana to crucial win

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – A languid, unbeaten 52 from Narsingh Deonarine led Guyana to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Canada to enhance their chances in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament on Tuesday.
Deonarine struck four fours and two sixes from 32 balls and shared 91 – unbroken – for the third wicket with fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, as the Guyanese chased down 144 for victory in their Group-A match at Kensington Oval.
Chanderpaul provided the steadying influence, making 36 from 31 balls to take the Amazon Conquerors over the finish line with 18 deliveries remaining.
Deonarine ushered Guyana over threshold, when he drove off-spinner Junaid Siddiqui to mid-on for a deuce. He had taken another two off the previous delivery from the same bowler to reach his 50 from 31 balls.
The result meant that Guyana now have eight points from three matches and Canada remain rooted at the bottom of the table with no points, failing to win any of their three matches.
A top score of 40 from Canada captain Jimmy Hansra, a supporting knock of 38 from opener Ruvindu Gunasekara and 29 from Raza-ur-Rehman allowed the Canadians to post their highest total of the tournament of 143 for seven from their allocation of 20 overs.
Devendra Bishoo collected two wickets for 21 runs from fours overs for Guyana, whose captain Christopher Barnwell captured two for 24 from four overs.
The Guyanese started their chase briskly with Trevon Griffith upper-cutting the first ball of the innings from Guyana-born fast bowler Jeremy Gordon to third man for four and followed up with a six in the same direction off the same bowler.
In between, Chattergoon was fortunate when Salman Nazar put him down at cover off Gordon before he got into stride with a lovely extra cover drive off Henry Osinde from the first ball of the next over.
Chattergoon also pulled and back drove Gordon for two more boundaries before the bowler sauntered away, clutching the left-side of his lower back.
Chattergoon got two more fours in the following over from Osinde, but he was fortunate that substitute fielder Manny Aulakh dropped his meaty square cut at square cover for him to get the first.
Griffith drove Rizwan Cheema inside-out over cover for his second four in the next over, but he was stumped for 22 charging down and swinging wildly at the same bowler from the last ball of the same over.  Next over, Chattergoon, hitting into the breeze coming from the east, was caught at deep mid-wicket off Junaid Siddiqui for 29.
Deonarine got wound up when he lofted Siddiqui for his first six over long-off and Chanderpaul followed up with a four scooped to deep fine leg off Rizwan Cheema in the next over.
The two continued to work the ball into the gaps, punctuated with boundaries, until they got within reach of the target and Deonarine started to play more freely, swinging Hansra for a six over long-on and lofting the same bowler for six over long-off from successive deliveries.
Deonarine hastened the end with boundaries off consecutive deliveries straight and to third man in the eventual final over.
Earlier, Hansra smote three sixes from 36 balls to propel Canada to their competitive total, after the Guyanese bowlers had maintained control for most of the innings.
He added 41 with Nitish Kumar before Canada lost three wickets for one run in the final over of the innings.
Guyana face Windward Islands in their final group match on Thursday at this venue and Canada end against reigning champions Trinidad & Tobago on the same day.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, CCC challenge the Netherlands in the first game at 4:00pm, while Barbados come up against Sussex at 8:00pm.
