A man, who is facing armed robbery before the courts, was yesterday denied bail after he allegedly used force to rob a man of his $600,000 gold chain.
Sherwin Monker of Lot 98 La Penitence Street, Albouystown appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer the charge of robbery with aggravation.
The defendant was alleged to have stolen the chain belonging to Rayas Ali, a man known to him. The police claimed that on January 8, the defendant with another person approached the complainant and grabbed his pants from behind. The two persons allegedly relieved Ali of his gold jewelry and made good their escape.
The police told the court that Ali made a report to the police station where he also gave a description of the perpetrators.
According to them, the defendant, Monker, was arrested days later, for another offence and he was later identified as the man who robbed Ali.
The unrepresented Monker did not object to the facts presented. Pre- trial liberty was therefore denied, since the police claimed that he had a pending matter of armed robbery before another court and he was currently out on bail.
The prosecution stated that it was their belief that if bail was granted to the defendant he would not return to answer the matter against him.
With this said, Monker was told by the court that he would remain in police custody until January 18.
