DEAR EDITOR,
Region #9 is an administrative region that voted overwhelmingly in favour of the PPP/C.
It is expected that this vote of confidence will be amply rewarded by the government.
To date, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is yet to be elected and with each passing day there is increasing worry that the PPP/C is looking to reward its party stalwarts with leadership positions rather than looking at persons from within the party who may have ideas of moving the development of the region forward.
There is an encouraging trend within this new PPP/C government to do things by the book and offer positions on merit. It is sincerely hoped that a similar process is used to elect the new leadership in this region.
After all it is the people, not the stalwarts, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the PPP/C that needs to be given their just rewards – and the best reward to give to the people is excellent governance and leaders with a modern train of thought and development.
Rumours are swirling that old stalwarts, many of whom already had leadership positions and have precious little to show for it, are going to occupy the Regional Chairman, Vice Chairman and other leadership positions.
There is even talk about a Toshao from a nearby village who has done very little to develop his community and pays scant regard to laws governing Amerindian communities, but who is a stronghold PPP member, will be made Regional Chairman.
The Rupununi Region is on the threshold of major development and it needs strong leadership from the RDC to aid this development.
Our government is urged to give careful consideration to whoever is nominated for the positions of RC, VC and other leadership positions.
Let us continue our trend of development. There are many educated, enterprising leaders within the PPP/C membership in the Rupununi.
Give careful consideration to all of them before electing the new leaders. Look at those leaders who have been making positive change in the region.
An individual that immediately comes to mind is a young PPP/C member who is a leader in the North Rupununi. He has made vast development strides in his community and is recognized internationally despite his youth.
He is also highly qualified. Many were hoping that he would have gained the nod for RC but it seems that he has been discarded by the PPP/C leadership in the region. It is people like these that we want to see in positions of authority not recycled failures whose only claim to leadership is that they are party stalwarts.
Our region would like to be like the rest of the country where there is a new dispensation towards offering leadership positions based on merit, leadership and productivity. Our region has vast untapped potential which is only now being realized. Let us continue this upward trend of development by having proper leaders in the forefront of this development.
We hope that whenever the final decision is made on the leadership of our region that it is met with approval by the entire region.
Let us use this opportunity to continue to make change in a positive direction. Let us elect our new leaders on merit alone. Our people who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the PPP/C deserve this.
Rupununi PPP/C member
