Guyanese Medical students could be able to benefit from a Post Graduate Medical Programme in a matter of months. This disclosure was made recently by Dean of the Greenheart Medical University (GMU), Dr. Reza Chowdhury during an interview with this publication.
He revealed that currently, the university is developing the programme in collaboration with the Indian University Hospital as well as other United States of America Hospitals.
“We hope that within the next few months we will be able to develop it to a point where we can disclose it to the appropriate authorities in Guyana so that we will be able to roll it out for training purposes.”
According to Dr. Chowdhury, this move comes as part of the university’s effort to help address an evident concern, whereby both Guyana and the Caribbean have been chronically short-handed when it comes to medical professionals.
“Our vision is to address that issue and create professionals who will be able to serve every part of Guyana as well as the Caribbean,” he said.
In this regard, he noted, that training programmes will not only be directed to basic medical education but also, “we would like to develop programmes to a point where we are on par with the most developed countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. It is going to take some time to develop but I think we can do it,” Dr. Chowdhury intimated.
He observed that in the developed countries, presently, there are a lot of healthcare professionals who hail from India who have been trained at resource-challenged medical colleges in India. He pointed out that “these professionals who come out of India are on par with those in the most developed nations.” However, he noted that efforts are continually being made to learn from these countries so that “we can use their teaching to the maximum in training our professionals.”
