Miners, loggers and other players in the natural resources and environment sectors
President Donald Ramotar is expected to meet miners, loggers and environmental representatives tomorrow as government moves to map the way forward in those sectors.
are set to meet with government, tomorrow, in a major forum to plot the way forward for the country’s key sectors involving natural resources, following the creation of a responsible ministry – the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
Representatives from forestry, mining, wildlife, environmental management, protected areas and land management are all expected to gather at the King’s Plaza Conference Room, Main Street.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, President Ramotar and the Minister, Robert Persaud, will be among the officials in discussion with the stakeholders.
Mining and forestry in recent years have been playing a critical role in the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
At least two companies are set to drill for oil offshore this year with a number of large companies in the process of establishing large scale mining operations.
According to the Ministry, the National Stakeholders’ Consultation within the Natural Resources and Environmental sectors will discuss policies, opportunities and challenges in the economy.
To be discussed also are interventions to allow for the smooth operation of the sectors to create economic benefits and opportunities for all Guyanese.
“The hosting of the consultation is part of the new Ministry’s thrust of building closer collaboration with all stakeholders.”
The new Ministry was created under the recently sworn-in President, Donald Ramotar, and will among other things oversee the Low Carbon Development Strategy, including the Norway funds.
The previous Bharrat Jagdeo-led administration had started talks between miners and loggers to reduce the possibility of conflicts in the hinterland areas. There were challenges faced, with questions raised whether miners or loggers had more rights lands in which minerals and timber are located.
A special stakeholders’ team was established by Jagdeo to make recommendations to move the forestry and mining sector forward.
With gold coasting on a high from world prices over the past year, the mining sector has seen significant investments, with locals buying heavy equipment and a literal gold rush to the hinterlands.
Logging operators are now reporting a labour shortage.
Along with the gold rush had come the inevitable crime with a significant number of robberies and murders recorded in recent months.
Kaieteur News was told that these and other critical issues are to be discussed tomorrow.
