Verification of petrol pumps at gas stations countrywide has commenced, as the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), according to GNBS Public Relations Officer Lloyd David.
The standards bureau will have its mobile team inspecting and stamping devices for the first half of 2012.
This will commence shortly.
He said imported and locally manufactured devices that were submitted to the GNBS for initial verification (that is, new devices) totaled 978 scales, 2082 masses and 25 metre rules.
In addition, he said a total of 145 weighbridge scales, 85 large capacity test masses, 1, 533 petrol pumps, 41 storage tanks, 31 tanker wagon compartments and 117 bulk meters were verified for 2011.
“The National Weights and Measures Programme which is coordinated by the GNBS continued to be a major success for the organisation during 2011, as significant efforts were made to ensure that weighing and measuring devices used in commercial trade are verified to protect consumers and ensure equity in trade.”
He said the continued manufacture and importation of new weighing and measuring devices indicates that there has been an increase in usage of devices in the marketplace and there was a need for devices to replace those confiscated by the GNBS since they were deemed defective or unfit for use.
“For devices that were already in use by vendors, shopkeepers and other users including those used in supermarkets, hospitals, clinics, health centers, manufacturing companies, fish complexes, rice mills, sugar and food factories, petrol stations and bulk terminals a total of 7, 490 scales, 16, 321 masses, 61 measures and 66 electricity meters were subsequently verified for the year 2011,” David disclosed.
He further revealed that surveillance activities last year involved the inspection of devices used at shops and markets countrywide. This was to ensure that devices used for trade are stamped and are in good condition.
Adding that this was done at a specific period last year, David said inspectors visited 7,809 stalls/premises and 787 scales, 752 masses and six measures were seized and removed because they were either inaccurate, unverified or in a deplorable condition.
David said in 2012, the GNBS intends to further expand its services and find new ways of improving the Weights and Measures Programme in Guyana to better meet the needs of stakeholders.
