-Edges Edmonds after close voting process
By Edison Jefford
The Police Progressive Youth Club Coach, Lyndon Wilson has edged Running Braves Athletics Club Coach, Julian Edmonds for the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) ‘Coach of the Year’, following a close vote from the association’s council members.
Wilson will collect the award for the second consecutive year when the association host its Annual Award ceremony tonight at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) auditorium in Thomas Lands.
Kaieteur Sport was reliably informed yesterday that Wilson defeated Edmonds by two votes after the first round of choosing the winner was undecided; both Wilson and Edmonds had exceptional years last year, but Edmonds seemed to have had more results internationally.
For instance, Edmonds, who is responsible for the career of Stephan James, coached the junior athlete to three international finals, including the CARIFTA Games in Jamaica, Pan American Games in Florida and South America Games in Columbia. James collected a bronze medal from the South American Junior Games.
He consistently averaged around 47 seconds last year and was adjudged ‘Junior Male athlete of the Year’ for the AAG. James will also collect this award tonight. Edmonds also returned to the country the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) title Guyana lost with Wilson as coach.
Edmonds was coach of the 2011 IGG junior national team that won in Suriname. He was also the coach of the CARIFTA Games team last year. Wilson was handed the prize heavily on the basis that he is the coach of local Olympic qualifier, Winston George.
Wilson won the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic last year, but lost the Joint Services title with the Police club among the major meets last year. Because of the magnitude of his club, Wilson seemed to have done better with his team.
George will collect the award for ‘Senior male athlete of the Year’. Police athlete, Natasha Alder will collect, for the second consecutive year, the prize for ‘Senior female athlete of the Year’. It was really a dominant domestic season for Alder last year; the field events athlete won champion athlete at all four of the major competitions in 2011.
Jevina Straker is likely to be her runner-up according to our reliable source. This newspaper was told that Jevina Sampson is expected to get a special prize for her prodigy at just 13 years old as several other special prizes will be announced.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony is expected to deliver the feature address at the event that gets underway at 7pm.
