Mayor Hamilton Green has deemed recent comments by Presidential Advisor Gail Texeira on City Hall’s management as repugnant and unacceptable. He accused Government officials of replicating old tricks used in 1993 to frustrate the Mayor and City Council in a bid to impose an Interim Management Committee (IMC).
He believes that Government is using Council’s financial woes as leverage in enhancing their chances of winning Georgetown votes at the upcoming Local Government Elections. Green insisted that he will not repeat the mistakes that the previous Mayor and Councillors made.
He made those comments yesterday at a press conference attended by other Councillors at City Hall. Green is confident that if the IMC is instituted, Government will furnish it with adequate financial resources while the present Council’s revenue base is limited to tax collection.
According to a Government bulletin, Teixeira stated, “Cabinet noted the mismanagement of resources at the Mayor and City Council under Mayor Green’s leadership and is of the view that a radical change is needed to ensure that the citizens are provided with descent services. Government reaffirmed its continued desire to address the concerns of the citizens of the City and that it would do all that is possible to ensure that local government elections are held in 2012.”
Though the Mayor is being blamed by Government for City Hall’s challenges, Councillors are united in resisting any act of intimidation. He emphasized that Texeira is entitled to her views but Government should be cognizant that the Ministers of Local Government and Regional Development constantly engage the Town Clerk, City Treasurer and City Engineer.
Green pointed out that the payment of incentives issue involving the Town Clerk and City Treasurer was discussed at length during the last statutory meeting for 2011. The Mayor and Councillors did not condone their actions. Rather, the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development and Auditor General were asked to investigate.
He stressed that Texeira’s remarks flow from a mindset that disallows her to deal with reality that it will not be business as usual.
