One year partnership to benefit both sides
Guyana’s leading department store Giftland OfficeMax (13 Water & Holmes Streets) has once again proven that they are pioneers when it comes to the development of sports in Guyana.
Having already racked up an enviable record in relation to constant support for Guyana’s sportsmen and women, yesterday they further exhibited confidence in Guyana’s flagship football team, the ‘Golden Jaguars’ when they signed a multi-million dollar one-year deal with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
The simple ceremony took place in the Board Room of the GFF where Giftland OfficeMax was represented by CEO Ian Ramdeo and Marketing Manager Compton Bobb, while the GFF was represented by President (ag) Franklin Wilson and General Secretary Noel Adonis.
Bobb in remarks noted that they have always been tracking the progress of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ and did sponsor the team to some extent during the second stage of their World Cup Qualifying Campaign when Guyana won defeated Caribbean powerhouse Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda and Barbados in home and away ties to book their place in the third-round for the first time in its history.
“It’s better to give than to receive and Giftland OfficeMax is very pleased to be on board as a long term partner with the Guyana Football Federation in support of the Golden Jaguars. We are very passionate when it comes to supporting our sportsmen and women and this commitment here today is further testimony of that responsibility.
Once again we have planted a seed without being hesitant to develop the sport and our country as a result. This will be big and it will be successful. The success of this team starts with us, the companies and the people of the nation to assist in the Golden Jaguars creating more history in Guyana. Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
Our Jaguars are in unchartered waters and would need all the support they can possibly get in order to be one of the two teams that will advance from this stage that also features Mexico, Costa Rica and El Salvador.”
Wilson noted that the partnership will be beneficial to both sides with Giftland OfficeMax growing with the Jaguars as they continue to take the world by storm.
“We at the GFF are very humbled to welcome Giftland OfficeMax on board as a long term partner and we look forward to great things in the future. It is always excellent when sponsors recognize that their role in developing a product overtime is vital.”
Recently appointed Director of Marketing of the GFF Faizal Khan was praised for the leading role he played in sealing the deal with Giftland OfficeMax. Wilson lauded the energetic contributions that Khan has been making towards the continued progress and success of the Golden Jaguars.
He noted that Khan has also been instrumental in attracting a number of English based players to the team and has already confirmed that a number of new players have signaled their desire to represent Guyana.
Guyana will face Mexico on June 8th in their first game in Mexico; four days later, the Golden Jaguars will entertain Costa Rica at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. September 7 will see the Jaguars travelling to El Salvador, while on September 11 the return match-up between the two countries is set for the Providence Stadium.
Mexico will play their return game in Guyana on October 12 and on October 16, Costa Rica will entertain the Golden Jaguars to round out competition in this stage. The top two teams from the group will advance.
A number of other countries have approached the GFF to play friendly international matches including Grenada, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname and French Guiana among others.
On the issue of Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz continuing with the GFF, Wilson stated that Shabazz will continue.
“Shabazz will carry on as Head Coach of the Golden Jaguars; the GFF will have to do the necessary as usual in terms of writing the TTFF to work out the arrangements in terms of his time.”
The Media was also informed that Guyana will be participating in the CFU/CONCACAF Under-17 and 20 qualifying competitions. The Under-20 will begin in May while the Under-17s will commence action in July.
GFF Women’s Technical Director Mark Rodrigues and Technical Development Officer Lyndon France will represent the federation at the FIFA/CONCACAF Conference on Women’s World Cup – Germany 2011 that will be held in Vancouver, Canada January 26-29, 2012.
Also attending a Referees Forum around the same dates in Canada will be female Referees Diane Ferreira-James and Nakasi Liverpool.
The Women’s Under-20 team that just competed in the CONCACAF qualifying competition held in Cuba were complimented for their performance despite not qualifying for the finals. Guyana won their final game defeating Puerto Rico 1-0 after losing to Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
The GFF will also be running off a two-day Coaches Forum later this month which will attract coaches who will be involved at the national level.
In relation to the court matter involving the GFF and the GFA, the Media was told that the GFA was given until January month end to respond to the GFF petition to have both injunctions removed.
Despite that process, Wilson noted that the respective Attorney’s are expected to meet along with the concerned parties with a view to coming to a resolution shortly.
