Exportation of fruits and vegetables to regional and international markets in 2011 increased by 11 percent which accounts for $US7M in export earning, according to government agency statistics. According to the statistics, the country produced more than 4,000 tonnes of citrus, including limes, 21,000 tonnes of fruits and more than 60,000 tonnes of vegetables
This representing a 47 percent increase over 2010.
In addition there was approximately 18, 000 tonnes of coconuts, 900 tonnes of legumes, and more than 12,000 tonnes of provisions were also produced last year.
The country also produced approximately 8,000 tonnes of spices during the year as part of a project to diversify agriculture production in outlying areas and boost agro-exports.
The spice project was introduced to promote diversification in mostly hinterland areas which have suitable soil types to grow crops such as turmeric (dye), ginger, black pepper and nutmeg.
Coconut was the number one export commodity for cash crops in 2011 accounting for about 58 percent of other crops exported. Copra and coconut water were ranked at number two and three respectively.
Agriculture is the most important production sector for Guyana’s economy accounting for 30 percent of the GDP. Sugar and rice account for 70 percent of agriculture GDP as well as one third of the total export earnings.
