Letter to the Sport Editor…Benjamin is ill-informed

Dear Editor,
It is rather unfortunate that once again I have to devote precious time to respond to an inaccuracy in the sport pages of the Kaieteur News, which sadly, happens to be from an author who knows that I am easily accessible for clarification since we are colleagues.
My attention was drawn to an article under the caption “Athletes in Guyana now has a GTF page on Facebook” not for the relevance and significance of the item, but for attempting to undermine the structure of the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic.
Mr. Editor, it is my informed view that information that lacks truth amounts to mere propaganda, and propaganda not properly demolished can become established beliefs. Hence my purpose here is to prevent the public from consenting to a paragraph in that article.
In paragraph nine of the article that appeared in the Wednesday, January 11, 2012 newspaper, the author, who could have readily accessed elucidation on the subject, quoted the supposed Founder of GTF (Guyana Track Family), Akeem Benjamin as stating “What is the sense of having a big event like the President/Jefford’s Meet and no video recordings is done to show the public”.
For the record, permit me to advise Mr. Benjamin that the President’s/Jefford Classic has one of the most talented and professional marketing teams for mega sport events in Guyana, which has helped enabled its growth in the two years it has been in existence.
It would be remiss of me, as Co-Founder of the President’s/Jefford Classic, to not task this group of individuals with preparing video recordings of the meet. If Mr. Benjamin had so desired, DVD copies of both editions of the meet, so far, could have been made available.
But to come out and misinform the public about the meet having no video recordings is an act of ignorance that, in my opinion, should not be part of someone who aspires to captivate athletes on a social media network. Mr. Benjamin ought to establish prudence with facts.
It is an embarrassment to have someone with such ambitions, who is an athlete, and who happens to be ill-informed. The Coordinators of the President’s/Jefford Classic pay enormous sums of money to have that meet properly recorded and packaged for its sponsors, especially. The author of the article could have known all this with a simple query.
However, again, for whatever reason, I was not allowed to clarify a matter of direct consequence. The author has sought my input on a number of different issues pertaining to various subjects but on this particular instance when the matter happens to be of personal proportions, chose to ignore my input as was done before. This is becoming an alarming and dangerous trend.
