-ten persons homeless
Ten persons are now homeless following a fire at Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara early
yesterday morning. Within 30 minutes the fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the five bedroom of the lot 36 Public Road, Den Amstel home.
Matriarch of the home, Debra Roberts told Kaieteur News that it was around 03:00 hours when she was awoken by relatives.
Roberts said the entire house was filled with smoke and they quickly exited the house and later watched as her house went up in flames.
The family did not manage to save anything from the house.
Presently they are staying temporarily at relatives next door to the burnt out building.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Fire Service came under heavy criticism as according to Roberts, firefighters arrived at the scene almost an hour after the blaze started. The woman opined that if they had arrived promptly, they might have been able to save something.
