As the Annual General Meeting of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) looms, Coordinator and Coach Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers has lauded the efforts of his boxers saying that his Gym had a good year. He is also adamant that the entity will attain greater heights over the next year.
The squatty pugilist who doubles as the coach of the facility stated that despite the many challenges faced by the administrators and boxers alike, he was satisfied with the achievements of the pugilists and their fortunes over the year.
Rogers spoke with Kaieteur Sport at the gym situated at the People’s National Congress Headquarters, Strand and St. Magdalene Streets, New Amsterdam Berbice. He disclosed that the Club which started as a relatively small unit now has a membership in excess of 30 active fighters ranging from Under-15 to seniors.
Two of his charges, Richard Williamson and female fighter Rena David, had journeyed to Barbados to participate in the Ronald Wilson Goodwill tournament and the former boxer had returned with a silver medal. Kelsie George is the Gym’s representative to have graduated to the professional ranks.
Several other fighters had given yeomen service including Richard Williamson whose only loss was to 2012 Olympic Games hopeful, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan. His siblings, Joel Williamson and Jamal Eastman along with female fighter Rena David also performed beyond expectation. Keon Williams and Nicolas Phillips also came in for special mention.
Rogers pointed out that the PRBG also organized several tournaments while participating in all of the GABA events. The boxers experienced mixed fortunes securing several best boxer awards at the Georgetown held tournaments while winning all of the tournaments staged in Berbice. Boxers of the PRBG also travelled to Georgetown and participated in the Friday Night Fights where they enjoyed tremendous successes. Further, the gym successfully staged its annual Inter Club Boxing Championship in observance its anniversary celebrations last year.
Touching on plans for the New Year Rogers intimated that administrators are currently considering their participation in an imminent tournament scheduled for February 3-4 in Georgetown. He said that the club will be hosting their annual Inter Club Invitational tournament sometime in February even as they envision more cooperation among with Berbice based gyms.
Rogers reflected on his performances over the year where he had fought four times losing twice while winning a similar amount. Among his victims was Barbadian Selwyn Lett and he said he feels satisfied with his performance especially since it occurred shortly after his involvement in a serious motor vehicle accident in 2010.
The diminutive bantamweight boxer is confident that he will continue his winning ways this year. “The feelings ah got right now ah feel more licks gon share this year, it will not be pocket rockets but grenades and bombs that will be launched this year,” he confidently asserted.
Rogers credits his personal success and that of the Gym to the combined input of private individuals and members of the Corporate Community.
These include officials of the PNCR who have willingly consented to the use of their building to facilitate training sessions, Mayor Claude Henry, Dr. John Austin, A. Ally and Sons, Banks DIH, Officers of the Central Police Station, Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan, Candy Shop, Republic Bank, Gordon’s Boutique Stationery and Copy Centre, Stretch D Dollar Supermarkets, New Building Society, Suresh General Store, La Caribee Diner and the Esxecutives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) among others.
Former professional boxing champions Jeff Roberts and Al Thomas as well as Coaches, Eli Hazel, Monty Bovell and Crawford Rogers, all contributed to the success of the PRBG and came in for special mention.
Amidst the praises, Rogers said that he is somewhat disappointment that GABA President Steve Ninvalle has failed to keep an earlier promise to make the Ministry’s Drop In Centre at Smythfield New Amsterdam available to facilitate training sessions for his boxers.
Nevertheless, he is thankful to the GABA President for providing much needed boxing gear and footwear for his charges.
The Gym also stands to benefit from the chivalry of Elton ‘Collie Bully’ Dharry who visited during December and pledged to support the boxers.
Plans are also in train to host a ProAm Boxing Card in the Ancient County.
