– remanded on four charges
Police yesterday slapped four charges against a South Turkeyen man who is accused of abducting the mother of his children and allegedly robbing her family.
The man, Sherwin Trotman, claimed that he was wrongfully charged since it was the relatives of his children’s mother who were making the allegations.
Trotman, a taxi driver, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to face the charges.
It is alleged that on January 9th, he abducted 18-year-old Ashanti Payne at gunpoint and robbed her mother, Margaret Griffith, of a quantity of gold jewelry valued $70,000. It was also alleged that he wounded Edward Griffith, the girl’s father. He was also charged with the possession of an illegal gun.
Trotman, who was not required to plead to the indictable charges of armed robbery and abduction, insisted that he was innocent of the other two charges.
The police claimed that on the date mentioned, a masked Trotman entered the home of the complainants and used the .32 Taurus revolver to hit the father across the head. He also relieved the mother of her jewels.
They said he later ‘ducted-taped’ the mouth of Ashanti and took her away in a car which was later identified as his. The police said that he allegedly released the girl and sent her back home in a taxi.
Based on reports, the police arrested Trotman and later took him to his Turkeyen home where a search was conducted. The gun was found.
An unrepresented Trotman told the court that he has two children with the woman and that she is pregnant again.
The prosecution asked for the court to deny bail since the accused did not give a proper explanation for the illegal gun. He also stated that the man is facing similar matters in another court.
Trotman’s matter was transferred to Magistrate Sueanna Lovell, Court Two. He was also remanded and will have to return to court on January 20.
