Forward Chris Williams raked in a 76 points record setting score, perhaps in local basketball history, and his teammate Marlon Pollydore added a hefty 50 for good measure as Victory Valley Royals wrote their name into the record books with a 150-48 rout of the Kashif and Shanghai Kings as the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s 2011/12 Under-23 Club championship heads into the semifinal round.
This ensured they finished their round of matches in the six team tournament on nine points, second to leaders Retrieve Raiders, who lost on the court to Amelia’s Ward Jets 56-50, but had that defeat overturned because of the Amelia’s Ward side having played an over-aged player.
Semifinal action was fixed for last evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court with Victory Valley Royals against GTS Half Mile Bulls and Retrieve Raiders versus Kashif and Shanghai Kings.
In the final three sets of matches which were played on Sunday evening at the MSC venue, former junior national player Williams and current Under-19 national Pollydore combined for 126 points or 84 per cent of their team’s eventual record total of 150 against the undermanned Kings who were down at the end of the third quarter 100-38, with Williams already posting 52 points at that stage of the match.
Apart from Williams and Pollydore, Kyle Stewart contributed 12 points for the winners who ended with one loss against the Raiders in the six team championship.
Akeel Primo with 17 and Levar Britton 15 were the best players for the Kings, who by virtue of Jets forfeiting their win against Raiders later that night, were now assured to play last night in the semifinals against Raiders who finished top because of their win over Royals earlier in the competition.
The Jets needed to beat the Raiders to ensure their place in the final four and did so but with a player who was over the age limit and despite their win 56-50 will not advance.
Emmanuel Archibald had played his heart out for the Jets with 23 points, while Donnel Benjamin, the player under question, contributed 13 points. Raiders were led by Geoffrey LaRose who scored 18 points with Omar Sam and Yannick Primo each netting 11 for the team which topped the round robin format of the 2011/12 competition.
In the first game of the triple header, GTS Bulls scored their third win with a 76-44 win over Block 22 Flames as their best player Michael turner led the way with 21 points as Jason Braithwaite ended with 14, while for the Flames, Nevin Glen got 13 points.
