Dear Sir,
Several of the Ministers of Government have been accused of being involved in corruption and the Opposition Parties who now have a majority in Parliament are committed to uncovering such corruption. The first-time appointed Ministers are under particular scrutiny.
The newly-appointed Attorney General has many minuses against him among which is the fact that he is a Junior Counsel and within living memory it had only been Senior Counsel who had been appointed to the office of Attorney General.
And secondly, and most important, the Attorney General has to sever his connection with his Law Firm and must not be seen to be or be suspected of being involved, directly or indirectly, with the litigation or other affairs of his Law Firm. This means that he cannot practice under cover or clandestinely still deal with litigants. This means he must not be suspected of trying to influence the Judges or court officials by virtue of his office.
The Attorney General’s Chambers must never be suspected of channeling Governmental legal work to his Law Firm. Such Governmental Law work is valued at hundreds of millions of dollars and must be tendered for and equitably distributed.
This form of corruption has to be nipped in the bud before it starts to bloom. There are many formulas to deal with this form of corruption but one could be having the Bar Association being the watch-dog or creation of a Committee with the Bar Association and Parliamentary Parties to work with the A.G.’s office in the allocation of Governmental legal work.
