Construction of the $310M sheet pile revetment project at New Hope,
East Bank Demerara is said to be 40 percent completed. The project is expected to conclude on February 23, but owing to some difficulties the contract duration may once again be extended.
According to Geoffrey Vaughn, Chief Sea and River Defence Officer, Public Works Ministry, physical works under the project commenced during November 2011. While driving the steel sheet piles to erect the revetment, objects beneath the surface are preventing the contractor, Samaroo Investment, from executing works expeditiously.
Vaughn asserted that this may warrant the Ministry extending the contract for the second time since it was awarded in May 2011.
The first delay under the project was as a result of the contractor being challenged with sourcing of steel sheet piles on the European market. After months, the materials arrived in Guyana in late September last.
The $14M diversion road constructed by BJ Civil Works is being used by traffic heading in the southern direction (towards Timehri) while those traversing north (towards Georgetown) are utilizing the East Bank Public Road.
The diversion road, constructed east of the public road, is 12 feet wide and 330 metres in length with 1.5 inches of asphalted surface. The design of the road includes 18 inches of white sand, 12 inches of sand clay, white sand and cement, four inches of crushed stone, and prime coat, tack coat, and then 1.5 inches of asphalt. Each stage of the works must be compacted.
Constructing a concrete structure instead of a timber bridge was necessary owing to the volume of traffic that traverses the East Bank Public Road. In addition, the Demerara River rests on the shoulder of the road, and as such the existing roadway would be occupied with machinery, materials and labourers during the sea defence construction.
