Bharrat Narine, the owner of a prominent Grove taxi service, burst into tears yesterday when he
heard that the murder charge brought against him in early February 2010 was discharged.
His co- accused, Balram Singh, however, was not so fortunate. He is to stand trial in the High Court.
The duo was accused of causing the death of Bomeshwar Sukhdeo, a taxi driver who was allegedly robbed and killed for his vehicle.
The matter which was brought before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry, had produced several witnesses who testified on behalf of the prosecution, during a 23-month period. The degree of evidence required to cause the men to be committed to the High Court was produced and it was up to the defendants to lead their defence.
Narine was subsequently freed, but when Singh was asked to produce his witnesses, he declined. Instead, with a grin, he told the court that he was innocent of the charge, and wished to reserve his defence for the Supreme Court.
In the meantime, the family of the deceased could not hold back their tears. Sukhdeo’s mother wept profusely when the matter was called the day before. Yesterday, as soon as the accused were called to hear the matter against them, she walked out of the court.
The Sukhdeos related to this paper that they were happy about the committal of Singh to the High Court, they however questioned why Narine was not sharing the same fate.
In January 2010, Singh and Narine were charged with Sukhdeo’s death after the police had alleged that they murdered the taxi driver and stole his car. Acting on information, the police said they went to a location in Herstelling on the East Bank of Demerara where they recovered the dead man’s car.
They said that the detention of Singh subsequently led to the arrest of Narine. They claimed that they were also taken to the charred remains of a person who was later identified as the deceased.
The body of Bomeshwar Sukhdeo, also known as Anil, was discovered on the Mocha Arcadia access road.
