Two gunmen shot popular Mahdia businessman Roger Hinds at around 19:00 hrs yesterday before fleeing with over $5M and two of the victim’s licenced firearms.
Hinds, 47, was shot in the left forearm and left leg while sitting in his pickup in D’Urban Street, Lodge, near a relative’s residence.
The businessman’s son, who witnessed the attack, said that the bandits escaped in a waiting car with the cash as well as two of his father’s licenced handguns.
He believes that his father was attempting to defend himself when the men shot him.
According to the son, he and his father had just left Garnett Street and had stopped in D’Urban Street, Lodge, to visit an aunt.
Kaieteur News understands that the son had exited the vehicle and was in his aunt’s yard when two armed men went up to the vehicle and shot Hinds before relieving him of a bag containing the cash.
“I heard two gunshots, but I thought that they were firecrackers… but then I looked over the road and saw they (the gunmen) had him,” the son said.
According to the son, the bandits then ran a short distance before entering a car.
“I tried to run as fast as possible, but then I saw that he was bleeding, so I stopped a cab and took him to the hospital.”
While it appears that the victims were trailed to their destination, the son said that he saw nothing suspicious during the journey.
Hinds was treated at the GPHC’s Accident and Emergency Unit. He was said to be conscious and his condition was listed as stable.
The businessman is the owner of a multi-million dollar hotel at Mahdia, and also owns the Hinds Mini-Mall. He dug two wells in the community some years ago to supply water to his business places and to residents free of charge twice a day.
An avid football fan, Hinds has sponsored the Roger Hinds Emancipation football competition at Mahdia and regularly donates cash and other incentives to outstanding players.
