Four gunmen attacked, terrorized and robbed a Vryheid, West Canje, Berbice family around 20:30hrs on Monday shortly before making their escape.
Owner of the Fung- Fook Supermarket, Pamela Fung- Fook, told Kaieteur News that the gunmen arrived shortly after she had left the home briefly, whilst leaving her daughter, Erica, her father and 2 other relatives at the business premises.
According to Erica, she noticed a white Toyota AT 212 car with the marking ‘Prophecy’ written on it, passing up and down about four times. Suspecting something was amiss, she tried to alert the other occupants of the business, but it was too late. The men had already stopped in front of the place and, with ‘Gaza kerchiefs’ covering their faces, stormed in with one handgun and 2 long guns along with a cutlass.
“I pulled the bolt to close down [the shop] and four men, three of whom had guns and 1 had a knife, pulled me out and beat me up and asked me for money,” she recalled. The young lady said that she gave them all of the day’s sales, “but they beat me from the step and took me upstairs, slapped me and lashed me in my head with a cutlass”.
All this time, her father who was at the back of the supermarket was not aware that an attack was going on in front. Their two family friends, at the premises at the time, were also subdued by the bandits. Whilst upstairs, Pamela Fung- Fook noted that “I pulled out everything and give them, all the jewels and cash (an undisclosed amount)”.
Afterwards, they brought her back downstairs and then she discovered the other bandits beating her father.
“I see them hitting my father and I told them to stop and they told me to ‘Shut up Bitch!’. The men then ran out and made their escape in the car. “I screamed for help to the neighbours,” Fung- Fook recalled, but no help was forthcoming.
The entire ordeal lasted about 15 minutes. Police arrived on the scene and took statements and photographs. They are said to be looking for the bandits.
Kaieteur News understands the car may have been rented from a taxi- service that bears a similar name on the Lower Corentyne area.
According to Pamela Fung- Fook, this is the fourth time they have been attacked by bandits, the last occasion being three months ago. However, the bandits were not successful on the previous occasions due to neighbours who chased them away.
Mr Fung- Fook vented his frustration with the Ministry of Home Affairs by saying that more businesspersons need to have firearms in their possession. He noted that almost every night, someone gets attacked and robbed in the Vryheid area. He stated that the area is very dark at nights and needs street lights. Vryheid is located on the outskirts of New Amsterdam.
