In an unprecedented move, the administration of the police ‘A’ Division has transferred almost the entire staff of the East Ruimveldt Outpost as they investigate allegations of massive corruption.
This move follows the arrest of two detectives, a constable and a lance corporal, during a sting operation, after they had allegedly collected a large sum of money from a member of the public for the sale of an illegally obtained motorcar.
Kaieteur News understands that the ranks had demanded $300,000 for the purchase of a car which they had seized from a shady character.
According to a source, the two ranks had swooped down on a man after they had received information that he was smuggling cars into Guyana from neighbouring Suriname.
At the time the man was driving one of the suspected smuggled vehicles, and he fled, leaving it behind when he was confronted by the police ranks.
The vehicle was taken to the East La Penitence Police Station compound where it was lodged.
But the ranks came up with a scheme, and since they were sure that the suspect would not return to claim the vehicle, they arranged a sale for it.
They secured a buyer- or so they thought- and made arrangements for a down payment of $300,000.
Unknowing to them, the prospective buyer had recorded the conversation about the deal.
He then reported to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud who set up a sting operation.
The man eventually went to the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost where he met the lance corporal and allegedly handed him the money.
When ranks, who were on the stakeout, entered the station they found the money on the ground under the desk of the Lance Corporal who denied any knowledge of the money or the transaction.
He was however placed under close arrest while the Constable was held later.
Investigators believe that the other ranks at the outpost also had knowledge of the transaction and a decision was taken to transfer some of them, where they will be under more supervision.
