Guyana Defence Force Coach Robert Chisholm strongly believes that both his athletes, Rupert Perry and
Quinse Clarke can qualify for the London Olympics Games in August before the hosting of the games.
Chisholm reported to Kaieteur Sport that his Club’s athletic 2011 year was productive and also feels that once the two athletes are granted the golden opportunity of training on synthetic track for the prestigious event, they both will be able to make qualify since they have the ability and requirements needed.
“ Perry and Clarke have good chances of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics Games…they have the ability, all they need is the assistance to at least train on a synthetic track and that is what Guyana does not have presently.”
He further added that the two talented athletes can “either be given a chance to train at the High Level Training Centre in Jamaica or on a synthetic track in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Asking the Guyana Defence Force Coach about Winston George, who is a member of the Police Progressive Youth Club, he said that the gifted athlete has a lot of training to do on a synthetic track; “If Winston George has that chance of training on the synthetic track for the London Games I feel he will reach the semi-finals or finals in the 400m.”
Chisholm also highlighted his club’s aims for this year, which will be to dethrone Police Progressive Youth Club at the President/Jefford’s Classic Meet and the Under 23 Meet (two of the major local meets for the year).
Speaking joyfully about this club win at the Joint Service Championship last October, Chisholm revealed that the athletes were able to break old records setting their new personal best times both locally and overseas.
“Leslain Baird won the Javelin at the Joint Service Championship but recorded his personal best (PB) at the President/Jefford’s Classic last May at the Mackenzie ground. Cleveland Forde also had his PB made in Panama at the South American 10k where he ran 30 minutes and broke both 800m and 1500m records at Joint Service Championship. Tiffany Smith broke the women’s 400m record at the Joint Service Championship and Perry broke the male’s 100m and 200m records, while Clarke won a bronze after competing at the ALBA Games in Venezuela,” Chisholm said.
Revealing his desire his club this year, the Coach said that it will be to develop a stronger competing team in athletics especially in the field events and middle distance areas, “Presently the club is lacking junior females and this is one of the links on our chain that need to mend in the Club, if we have more junior females we will be able to nurture them in becoming top sprinters in Guyana.”
Chisholm ended the interview by saying that the Club is preparing for the first event of the year which will be the Cross Country race, which is normally held in the National Park on the last Sunday in January.
