Guyanese athletes can now freely interact with athletes from around Guyana and internationally on the newly
created Guyana Track Family (GTF) page on the most popular website, Facebook, as they seek recognition in showcasing their talent via internet to the World.
Founder of Guyana Track Family, Akeem Benjamin, an athlete of Police Progressive Youth Club, told Kaieteur Sport that the page was created on 4th August 2011 with the main purpose of uniting athletes as they come together in sharing their experience with each other and also for Track and Field fans.
“It is a Facebook group that is made to bring together all the runners, jumpers and throwers around Guyana and also from the international scale so that we can share our experience with others in the group.”
The founder also added that apart from creating the group for the athletes to interact, the group was made also draw some amount of public attention which is very much needed for athletics in Guyana.
The athlete, who once resided in the Bahamas, said that when he returned to his homeland he noticed that there was a little problem where the runners and coaches would fight against each other and thought that it was unnecessary. “Where I came from we run against each other but at the end of the competition everybody is going to become the best of friends and even the coaches.”
Benjamin also revealed that among the other plans for the group, would be to create an Athletic Association of Guyana website so that the athletes can be up-to-date with upcoming events and also to publish an Athletic Sports Magazine once sponsorship is acquired.
The twenty year old athlete further noted that he’s presently working on launching an Athletic Sports Magazine Blog in the meantime where athlete’s profiles will be created with their personal data and also to have a featured athlete of the week.
With the GTF page, it’s guaranteed that most athletes in Guyana will gain some sort of exposure since technology is so advanced; athletes can upload videos from their developmental meets and also international meets with themselves, likewise journalists can view the page to see the concerns and changes that occurred in Track and Field.
Benjamin declared that he will be trying his best to ensure that every meet in Guyana is recorded and uploaded on the page so that everyone can see; “What is the sense of having a big event like the President/Jefford’s Meet and no video recordings is done to show the public,” he quizzed.
According to the founder of the page, athletics in Guyana is lacking the support from the Government to fund athletes to travel to receive the best exposure by running for their country and further believes that Guyana is mostly focused on Cricket and Football.
Adding to what was said during the interview; Benjamin has the notion of the Government funding athletes and games which will aid in changing most athletes mind about athletics since most think that Track and Field is a waste of time presently.
Questioning the founder about his club mate, Winston George, who will be representing the land of many waters at the Olympics in August, he said that it is a pleasure to have a member of his club attending the Olympics and supports him fully on his Olympic endeavors.
Benjamin also encouraged the coaches to pay a hundred percent to all their athletes instead of focusing on something that does not concern Track and Field whilst conducting their duties. (Juanita Hooper)
