Weeks after the commencement of investigations, local police personnel are expected to officially confront
embattled Commissioner Henry Greene with the rape allegation made against him.
A senior police official has informed that the process, in keeping with Standard Operating Procedure, will be done sometime this week.
It is expected that Greene, who is presently on administrative leave to facilitate the probe, will be asked to give a statement on the matter. However he can refuse to do so.
Since the allegations were made by a 34-year-old woman, Greene has remained silent and last night was no exception when he was contacted by this newspaper.
“You know I cannot comment on the investigation,” Greene said when asked if he was contacted by the investigators.
Local police are being assisted by a six-man team of investigators from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who were invited on the recommendation of President Donald Ramotar.
Kaieteur News understands that the investigating team which is being spearheaded by Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, has been perusing the statement given by the accuser, and has also visited the hotel where the alleged incident occurred.
“They are doing a lot of things. They are tying up all areas,” a source close to the investigation told Kaieteur News.
Speaking with this newspaper last night, the woman said that since giving her statement to the police, she has not heard anything further from them. This is despite being told that international investigators, who were invited by the Guyana government, had arrived in the country since last week.
She told this newspaper that she has not been contacted by them and will be contacting her attorney on the matter.
But a police source informed that it is not really necessary for the investigators to meet with the woman since they have the benefit of her statement.
In December last year, in an interview with several members of the media in the presence of her attorney Nigel Hughes, the woman had described an incident in which she claimed that the commissioner had taken her to a city hotel and forced her to have sex with him against her will.
The woman has made it clear that she will see the matter through to its conclusion.
“Am I a mad woman to just come out of the blue with an allegation like this,” she stated.
