Simeon Hardy has of his boxing prowess saying that he is the best local welterweight boxer around. Indeed, one may grudgingly agree when one peruses his string of victories and unbeaten record. Better known for his 20 seconds, record breaking knockout of Patrick Boston and his second round stoppage of veteran Winston Pompey, Hardy has patented the infamous ‘chin check’ a wicked left hook that has rendered his opponents senseless.
On Friday January 27, Hardy faces the first stern test of his fledgling career when he opposes Trinidadian based Iwan Azore in a 12 rounds welterweight bout that nets the winner the prestigious Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) welterweight title.
The two will appear in the main bout of an 8 bout card that includes four amateur bouts as the Friday night fights resume at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). The boxers scheduled to be on show will trudge to the Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers to attend to the final details in the signing ceremony this afternoon.
In the other professional fights, former heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers will tackle Anthony Augustin in a 4 rounds scrap as both fighters battle to restore their flagging careers. Both suffered stunning losses to Kurt Bess and obviously would want to claim a victory and subsequently net a return bout.
Already, Rogers have commenced the reparatory journey when he narrowly lost out to Trinidadian Kirston Manswell in the Twin Island Republic last week. Despite losing a very close decision, Rogers could feel comforted after most of the audience remained adamant that he had been ‘done in.’
Local middleweight champion, Edmond DeClou, fresh from his decisive victory where he dethroned former local and European champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, will be anxious to continue his winning ways when he faces Patrick Boston in a 4 rounds super/middleweight shindig. The night’s opener would feature Jermaine King up against Cecil Smith over 4 rounds. When the two faced off last year Smith had walked off with the decision but the results could be different this time since he will be facing a vastly improved King. The latter fighter has held Barbadian Miguel Antoine to a draw even after the Bajan had defeated Mark Austin twice.
Despite dropping the first decision, King will enter the ring a more improved fighter which should present an interesting scenario. Otherwise, there will be the usual four amateur bouts and the organizers are currently awaiting that list from the officials of the Guyana Amateur Boxing association (GABA).
The price of admission remains at $1,000 for adults and $500 for children. Further, the bouts will not attract a live broadcast but will be aired at a later day.
