-Following George’s death last month
By Edison Jefford
Vijay Panday is likely to become the new Head Coach of the Bounty Colts Basketball Club after the death of Phillip George last month had effectively left the position vacant in the club that had faced some amount of administrative problems in the last five years.
Panday is the former Head Coach of the Beepat’s Scorpions Club, and until his release two years ago, he was the only paid coach of a local basketball club. The club’s financial investment in the coach reminded of their confidence in him to move the club forward.
However, Scorpions believed that they did not get the results they had hoped for under Panday’s guidance. Nevertheless, the coach told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that George anointed him heir to the Bounty Colts dynasty before he had passed on December 20 last year.
“I will be taking over the club as coach and the management of the team. Before George died, he told me that since I wasn’t coaching, I could help him. Unfortunately, he died and I don’t want to see the club break up, so I will work with them,” Panday indicated.
He made it pellucid that he does not have any personal ambition with taking up the post. He said that his sole aim is to ensure that the structure of the club is restored and its foundation as one of the basketball institutions with a solid nursery continues to be erected.
“I will get some of the senior players around the club active in the development of the youths. It will not be Vijay thing but I will get all those who are available involved in getting this club back to where it was. I think we all owe George that,” he said.
Panday related that he was deeply shaken when George passed. He said George shaped his career on the Burnham Basketball Court when he was just six years old. He called George a pioneer and basketball leader who was never recognised in more significant ways.
“I will ensure that his (George’s) legacy lives on. I will ensure that Colts become the number one club in Guyana again. One of the first things that I will work on with the management of the club is an annual tournament in the name of Phillip George,” Panday informed.
He said that he is immediately going to work with his first meeting with the club set for Friday at the Burnham Basketball Court at 7pm. Following that meeting, Panday related that he hopes that his first practice session with club will be on Monday at the same venue.
