Peter Barry, who had attained the status of football coach before he migrated to the United
Kingdom a few years ago, has scored another first after being appointed as the head coach of the senior female team in that country with specific responsibility of the youth academy.
Berry spoke with Kaieteur Sport soon after the appointment and said that he is delighted to have attained the position. He reminded that he has had a successful year with the Solidrock Academy and had been instrumental in the development of several players. He said that most of these players graduated to a higher level and went on to play for several established clubs.
His work did not go unnoticed and Mr. Barry said that he was invited by the Tooting and Mitcham football clubs for an interview shortly before clinching the appointment. Both clubs are currently contesting for honours in the Ryman Premiere League.
According to Mr. Barry the academy offers football scholarships supported with academic pursuits and participants could progress to higher learning at the more established Rohampton University. “Those benefits have attracted me to the job and I wish to extend my fortune to Caribbean players, but more specifically Guyanese players so that they may benefit from similar initiatives,” said Barry.
He said that he recognized his ability to coach in the female department even before migrating to the United Kingdom. He reminded of his contribution when he and Gerald Laurie had teamed up to revitalize women’s football locally. He said that they had established teams in several regions including Linden, Berbice, Bartica, Buxton and Georgetown.
Barry also revealed that he had received some amount of satisfaction when a female national team comprising of most of the women that had been under his tutelage had defeated Barbados in home and away games.
