National Flyweight 2011 Champion, Imran Khan, is one of the nominees for the Junior Sportsman of the year award from the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) after being named Boxer of the year by the association.
In an interview with the President of GABA, Steve Ninvalle at Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday, Kaieteur Sport was told that the talented young boxer, who is only eighteen years old, was named boxer of the year by GABA and will also be their nominee for the Junior Sportsman of the year award.
Khan, a dedicated and discipline fighter who fought seven times for last year in his boxing career was able to secure five fights which aided at him being nominated for the prestigious position.
The talented boxer has in his collection a gold medal from the Ronald Wilson Memorial Tournament in Barbados last November and a bronze medal from the ALBA games which was held in Venezuela during 7-30 of July last year.
The President significantly noted that with Khan’s triumph over Lawrence Singh, an outstanding boxer who had won over a hundred fights, at the Professional and Amateur Card recently in Trinidad, the promoters gave a monetary donation to GABA of which they (GABA) decided to have him (Khan) half for his preparations for the Road to London training programme in Cardiff, Wales next month.
With Khan’s exceptional performance in Trinidad, Kaieteur Sport was made to understand that his fight will be shown on ESPN.
Meanwhile, the Technical Director of GABA, Terrance Poole, who had spearheaded the Guyana Defence Force team in winning both Novice and Intermediate Competition, was named the Coach of the year. Poole is also one of the national coaches guiding the fighters selected for preparation for possible selection on the London Olympics team.
Sebert Blake of the Forgotten Youth Foundation and James Walcott of Harpy Eagle were given honourable mention for their outstanding performance also during the year.
