– victim’s ex-boyfriend implicated
Police ranks yesterday rescued an 18-year-old girl from a ‘D’ Field, Sophia residence where an ex-boyfriend was holding her captive after abducting her at gunpoint.
The victim, Ashanti Payne, was snatched from an aunt’s home at Lot 31 Bent Street by the man with whom the teen had broken up with about a year ago. Police managed to track her to the suspect’s hideout some five hours later.
They also arrested the teen’s former boyfriend while recovering an unlicensed .32 Taurus revolver with five rounds of ammunition. Another man reportedly fled when the cops arrived.
Kaieteur News understands that the detained man has a criminal record.
According to a police release, Payne was at the home of her aunt, 59-year-old Margaret Griffith, when a man entered the residence and held the aunt at gunpoint.
After grabbing a quantity of jewellery, the intruder bound Payne’s hands with duct tape and took her away in a vehicle.
“Quick response by the police led to a search on a house at ‘D’ Field, Sophia, at about 07.30hrs today (yesterday) where Ashanti Payne was found…a man has been arrested,” the release said.
Police said that Payne was treated at a city hospital.
