… Dog chopped across face
About four masked bandits on Sunday afternoon attacked and brutally chopped 60-year-old retiree, Dalip Narine, called “Rasta” a retired cane harvester of Lot 44 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice. The man was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital before being transferred immediately to the Georgetown Public Hospital for emergency treatment.
Narine, who retired as a cane cutter only last December, lives with his wife 53-year-old Damattie Narine and three daughters aged 29, 28, and 24.
According to one of his daughters, Geranie Narine, it was about 18:30 hrs. She, her father and one of her sisters were at home. Her other sister and mother had gone to church. She and her other sibling were in the bottom flat watching television, while their father was outside relaxing in a hammock.
The young lady said that they asked their father to go and loose the dog which was tied at the back of the house.
Her father went to loose the dog and a while later she heard him start to scream and the dog was barking. She immediately left to go and investigate when she was confronted by a masked man waving a cutlass. The man and another accomplice chucked her back into the kitchen and started to demand money telling her “Go bring wha you get, go bring wha you get”.
Her sister in the meanwhile had scampered upstairs and bolted herself in a room before jumping through a window unto a shed , from where she continued screaming. The bandits left the other sibling downstairs and she started to scream, “thief” and ‘help” before following her sister upstairs.
On finding the door bolted the bandits entered another bedroom from where they took away three bags from a wardrobe before escaping. One of the bags contained an Identification card, passport and some cash.
As neighbours began to emerge the men fired a shot before making good their escape through the backyard.
The woman stated that when she ventured at the back yard her father was on the ground with chop wounds to his foot, arm and to the back of his head. He was rushed to the hospital by a neighbour.
The woman said her father told her that there were four bandits. The men had also chopped the dog across its nose and mouth. Her other sister, Savitri, stated that she and her mother were on their way from church when they got the message. They raced home to find a crowd and were greeted by the ugly scene.
Residents said that the police took some time before they arrived.
