Dear Sir,
The big song and dance by the PPP/C on election of the speaker of the House is really nothing more than an attempt to distract Guyanese from a deeper and more fundamental question. Why the President overlooked the Hon. Mr. Ralph Ramkarran, SC, for the position of Attorney General of Guyana?
All Guyanese know that for years, Mr. Ramkaran served the PPP/C faithfully. He was speaker of the House from 1992 until the last parliament in 2010. Citizens will recall that he disallowed almost all bills and motions brought to the House, by the opposition, on matters and issues of national interest. The records are there for all to examine. He did the biddings of the PPP/C.
When Mr. Moses Nagamootoo was reluctant to be part of any arrangement to pick a presidential candidate and refuse to even submit his name, Mr. Ramkarran willingly took part in the process and subsequently withdrew his name from the list of four presidential candidates of his party bowing to the wishes of the executives and supported them to pick Mr. Donald Ramotar, by the show of hands, to run for president of this country.
Yet for all of that, President Donald Ramator overlooked him and appointed Mr. Anil Nandalal, a junior counsel to the position of Attorney General. It was the first time in the history of this country that a junior counsel was appointed to such a high position of Attorney General of Guyana. One would have thought that the PPP/C would have appointed such an honourable gentleman, a senior counsel and one who has been with the party for years, to that position.
Now the party is dragging his name through the mud by fighting to have him elected as the speaker of the House. The PPP/C knows that it is difficult, nigh, impossible, for Mr. Ramkarran to be elected to that position, but they are making the effort with the hope that he would at least see that they are attempting something for him.
If the opposition allows Mr. Ramkarran to be speaker of the House, then they would have betrayed the confidence and trust Guyanese reposed in them. They would not be fit even to be an opposition because they would have exhibited a high level of foolishness.
I believe that Mr. Ramkarran should not allow himself to be treated like someone who is begging for a job. He is above that. He should walk away from it because he has his credibility and reputation to protect. He should not allow his good name and reputation to be tarnished by people who should have treated him far better.
