Preliminary works on the expansion of the East Bank Demerara Public Road have commenced. To this end, the Public Works Ministry, contractors and representatives of utility companies are in discussions concerning the relocation of poles and pipe lines from Providence to Diamond.
This is according to Robindranauth Chandarpal, Chief Transport Planning Officer, of the Public Works Ministry.
He enlightened that the contracts totaling US$17,249,965 were signed on October 3, 2011 by the contractors, Dipcon Engineering Services, BK International, and Gaico Construction in association with General Earth Movers of Trinidad and Tobago.
The contractors commenced mobilizing resources in November but physical works were being affected by poor weather conditions.
Chandarpal added that Gaico Construction commenced their construction works in October last year and has since cleared a significant portion of land. The company is tasked with converting sections of the cane fields into a two-lane road adjoining the existing roadway to create the four-lane thoroughfare.
Those two lanes, after construction, will become a bypass and works will commence to improve the existing roadway between Prospect and the ‘high-bridge’ outside the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) facility at Great Diamond.
Currently, beyond the ‘high bridge’ which is part of the Lot Three phase of the project, BK International has cleared a plot of land close to the GuyOil Service Station and is executing construction works near the existing roadway.
Chandarpal emphasized that an important aspect of the project is traffic management. When construction is in progress, contractors are required to have two lanes available to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.
Dipcon was awarded the Lot One phase of the project and is expected to construct the road from Providence to Prospect to a tune of US$8,003,265. Lot Two was awarded to Gaico Construction to the tune of US$5,802,640.
Meanwhile, BK International will be carrying out construction works under Lot Three, at a cost of US$3,444,060. These works will see the expansion from the ‘high-bridge’ at DDL to Diamond/ Grove.
The project duration is 18 months.
