A 21-year-old driver was on Wednesday last asked to post bail to the tune of $300,000, after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Gavin Barkoye of 243 Cummings Street, South Cummingsburg, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he was accused of causing the death of Ronald Roach, a motorcyclist.
The police alleged that on October 9, 2011 at South Road, Barkoye was on the eastern side of Cummings Street, approaching North Road when he failed to stop at the stop lights and thus collided with Roach who was riding along North Road.
Roach fell on the road side and was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he never regained consciousness. He succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The police claimed that the case file was taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice, with the result that Barkoye was charged.
The matter was later transferred before Magistrate Judy Latchman and a date set for the commencement of the PI. Barkoye will return to court January 18.
