Charwoman lands in court over stolen diamond bracelet
A 50-year-old cleaner was yesterday granted pre-trial liberty to the tune of $100,000 following the alleged theft of a gold and diamond bracelet belonging to one Nandanie Sukwah.
Chandroutie Muniram pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday. The jewelry was valued at 1.5 M.

The Lot 13 Plantation Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara resident, was said to have stolen the jewelry from Sukwah while performing cleaning tasks in the woman’s bedroom.
According to the police, between November 3, last year and January 3, 2012, at Sheriff Street, Muniram was employed by Sukwah, a person known to her for over a number of years. It is alleged that Sukwah made checks of her jewelry just before leaving her home to go out. At this time, Muniram was still in the woman’s house performing her domestic duties.
The court heard that Sukwah later returned to her home and again made checks for her jewelry where it was noticed that the bracelet was missing. A report was made and the woman was accused of the theft.
Muniram was represented by Defence Attorney Rexford Jackson. The lawyer said that his client was not a flight risk and requested that she be granted bail in a reasonable sum.
Following the prosecution’s no objection to bail; Muniram was asked to post the bail. She is expected back in court on January 9.
