Coach Dover & Braithwaite salute an esteemed son of the soil
Tributes continues to pour in following the unexpected passing of one of Guyana’s most acclaimed midfield players, Shawn ‘Fatso’ Bishop who died on Thursday last.
Joining the list in extending sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of the versatile player while reflecting on a glowing career were Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Jamaal Shabazz along with Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover who apart from being Assistant Coach of the Golden Jaguars was also Bishop’s Coach at Alpha United, his final club and former National player now Coach Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite.
The trio were all high in praise for a player ‘extraordinaire’ who would have touched the lives of many (players & fans) with his quality play and commitment during his career on and off the field.
Coach Shabazz who also had Bishop for two seasons in the T&T Pro League remembered a quality and talented player, one of the best he has ever worked with.
“Caribbean football has lost a great football brain and one of the best midfielders I have ever worked with in my career. I am happy that I was able together with Coach Dover to spend time with him last week before his passing.
“A true product of grassroots football that has brought tremendous joy to Guyanese football fans over the years. “It pains me that I could not do more when his condition worsened but Allah knows best, to Allah we belong and to him is our eventual return.”
Dover stated that Bishop’s death will be a great loss for football in Guyana. He notes that the left footed midfielder, a rarity in the game, was one of the better players of this era.
“Unfortunately however, his sickness really curtailed and hampered his contributions and his career in the past year or so but such is life, you have to live and you also have to die.”
Dover emphasized that ‘Fatso’ was an integral part of Guyana’s leading Club side – Alpha United, in the past four (4) years, pointing out that he was now stepping into the realms of coaching and had a very good brain to succeed.
“He was elevated to the Alpha United Coach staff and this was largely due to his vast knowledge and experience at the National level. He was in no uncertain terms, an asset to Alpha United and was very good when it came to guiding the younger players in terms of discipline and focusing on what was needed to improve their game.
“On behalf of the President, Executive and players of the Alpha United FC, my family and myself, I would like to extend sincere condolences to Bishop’s family and friends in this time of grief.”
Coach Braithwaite in his reflection states that, “Bishop was like my own son, he was one of the most coachable players and one of the best I have ever coached in my career so far.”
Braithwaite, also known as ‘Coachman’ remembers Bishop as one of the best passers of the football and expressed disgust that he was not able to visit the player whilst he was ill and bed ridden.
“You know I really feel bad I did not get to visit him while he was at home, we were very close. He was a very good listener on and off the field of play, qualities which more players need to inculcate if they are going to succeed. I am in the process of writing a tribute for him and it is proving to be a challenge every time I start to write.”
Braithwaite believes that Guyana’s football will miss a very good servant, recalling that Bishop was a winner for whichever he decided to for, Kitty Rangers, Santos, Beacon, Pele and Alpha United.
“He was a fighter, a winner, team player and powerful shooter of the ball. Those qualities and abilities we will miss. He had the ability to excite fans whenever he played, as a nation we will surely miss him. On Behalf of the President, Executive and players of the Pele FC, I would like to extend sympathy to the family and friends of the late Shawn Bishop.”
