Former Chairman of the Bartica Local Authority and Chairman of the Bartica Branch of the
People’s National Congress, Horace Shurland, died on Thursday at the Bartica Hospital. He was 78.
According to reports from the community, he collapsed with an apparent heart attack on Wednesday and had to be rushed to the hospital.
He was one of the longest serving officials of the PNC in Bartica, holding such offices as Regional Supervisor with responsibility for all of Region Five which later became Region Seven back in the 1970s and later Local Authority Chairman.
A contractor by profession, he was responsible for building many kokers and bridges in Bartica and in the Lower Mazaruni.
He will be buried in the former mining community on Monday.
