Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Carlton Joao, speaking with Kaieteur Sport
(Flashback)- Part of the thousands of fans that converged at the National Park for the finals last year.
via telephone yesterday about the performance of the ‘Guinness Greatest in da Streets’ Futsal Football Tournament, said that last year’s competition was an overwhelming success and plans are in train to ensure that this year’s event is even bigger and better.
Joao, who is a member of the Organising Committee, disclosed that Guyana is tentatively identified to host the finals of the Regional Tournament where it is envisaged that around seven Caribbean territories will be sending teams to contest.
The Marketing Executive praised the teams for their performances, while he also acknowledged the support given to the tournament from every community that the games were played in.
“We are definitely looking at making the tournament bigger and better this year and the inclusion of teams from the Caribbean is certainly a testimony of our desire within the Guinness family to make it so,” Joao stated.
Meanwhile, one member of the coordinating committee Marlan Cole in his assessment said he felt that the tournament was a huge success, adding that it was made possible mainly through the vision of the sponsor who according to him was willing to provide more incentives from the commencement of the tournament unlike previous years.
Cole spoke of the early planning and preparation as the two distinct qualities that would have also contributed to the obvious success of the competition.
“Last year’s tournament exceeded all expectations and to my mind one of the reasons for that was the fact that the sponsor was willing to throw more financial weight behind the event and the teams duly responded by producing a higher brand of football that the fans truly enjoyed,” Cole reflected.
He said the focus right now is to start preparations for the international segment since the intention is to make it bigger and better.
Cole added that Guyana has the privilege of hosting the tournament that will see at least seven Caribbean territories descend here for the regional finals, while he expressed how proud the entire organizing committee is after having the opportunity witness the tournament’s blue print adopted by the other countries within the region.
“We were not physically involved in the other territories and perhaps someday we will, but our satisfaction is that the concept was started here and we are proud that it has been adopted in the Caribbean and run with much success,” Cole pointed out.
Among the features Cole informed that were accepted were the measurement of the playing area, the rules, dimension of the goal and the format of the tournament.
The next tournament is slated for mid year.
