Guyana’s Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, has written to the President of the West Indies Cricket Board, Dr. Julian Hunte, indicating that the government IMC is prepared to send a team to the Regional T20 tournament.
The letter dated Wednesday January 4, requested the WICB indicate by yesterday their willingness to accommodate a team, the same team named by the previous GCB selectors.
The letter ended with a veiled threat to the WICB, “Please confirm immediately that the Guyana team will participate as previously selected by 4 pm, tomorrow January 5, 2012. While we hope to avoid court intervention to prevent any breach of any applicable agreements or the suspension of the tournament by, inter alia, government refusal of the use the various cricket stadiums throughout the region, if pressed we shall have no choice but to act.”
Here is the full text of the letter:
Dear Dr. Hunte,
We are in receipt of your letter dated December 30, 2011 addressed to the Guyana Cricket Board (“GCB”) concerning, inter alia, the upcoming Caribbean 120. As you know, the recent ruling of our Chief Justice, Ian Chang, quashed the GCB’s registration rendering it a non-existent entity.
Accordingly, for the safety our players, in respect of the rule of law, to protect the integrity of the game and as a temporary measure to manage cricket in Guyana until it is handed back to the people of country, we have had no choice but to appoint an interim management committee (“IMC”) to manage cricket.
The sole aim of the IMC is to restructure the game so that there can transparency, accountability and free and fair elections. As part of the IMC’s mandate, we therefore have no choice but to respond on the Guyana players’ behalf.
The members of the former GCB have indicated that a Guyanese team has already been selected to participate in the upcoming competition and the necessary arrangements have already been put in place for the Guyana Team’s participation. In fact we have been instructed that all that remains is for the team to arrive in Antigua. In order to maintain the status quo, the IMC in the stead of the former GCB confirms that it can provide the team previously selected.
Please see the attached list of players and officials. Certainly, our players and the game should not be made to suffer during the pendency of the resolution of any outstanding differences.
It is also important to note that we have previously reached out to the WICB in the past to address pressing issues concerning the mismanagement of cricket in Guyana to no avail. In fact, the WICB has failed to address the concerns raised or at all.
Please confirm immediately that the Guyana team will participate as previously selected by 4 pm, tomorrow January 5, 2012. While we hope to avoid court intervention to prevent any breach of any applicable agreements or the suspension of the tournament by, inter alia, government refusal of the use the various cricket stadiums throughout the region, if pressed we shall have no choice but to act.
We look forward to a prompt response and a speedy resolution.
Dr. Frank Anthony
